I am so surprised not to find this place in the TD list.. It was one of the best Chinese Restaurants in Lahore for a very long time... till they sadly had to vacate the huge building on main boulevard, Gulberg, soon after the rise of Hsin Kuang. This was the first Chinese place i have very faint memories of, Located in Barkat Market,(near my house) long ago. Owned and run by a wonderful Chinese family. Then they opened up a huge restaurant on Main Boulevard, right next to Ejaz Centre. Their food had always been awesome... even the new and posh Hsin Kuang could not break the loyal customers of this place. Food was always so so flavorful and fresh, and above everything, even the minutest customer concern was dealt with an immediate replacement. They later shifted to opp the zouk park, Off M.M.Alam road. The downfall started with a lot of restaurants emerging on the scene, acquainting Lahoris with various flavors, prior to which Chinese was the only foreign food we knew, and that too the very localized version :-). Hong Kong suddenly became obsolete and out of the way.. however the food quality remained persistent whenever i had a chance to try. There is no ambiance left now, so all u can do is take away. Yesterday my dad got me some hot and sour soup and Special Chowmien, and my mom's old fav, fried fish from there. I had been down with severe asthma, bad throat, fever flu etc etc and refused to eat anything i was offered, but the sight of those white n red boxes brought a smile on my lips. Skeptically i tried the soup... it was excellent, brought back the childhood memories.. same old taste... And the chowmien was also very nice, lovely tempting smell, fresh veggies, beautiful pink beef chunks, small shrimps and very tiny pieces of chicken. Their fried fish has always been special, has a very unique flavour, consists of two generous fillets and fries. I had sooooo missed this old fav of mine, more so after reading NBg's review of Mei Kong, that i thought i should share my life long experience with you, which was just refreshed, thanks to my illness ;-p So, for all those who miss that old Chinese flavour, i have some hope. May i suggest some of my all time favs at Hong Kong, Chicken in garlic sauce, Chicken with pineapple (that came on a hot plate in a red manchurian like sauce, not pineapple chunks floating in chicken soup) Beef Chilli Dry, Tail Prawns (that had the thinnest ever batter which i have been unable to replicate )and Kung Pao Chicken. I plan to take way some of my old favs very soon :-) P.S any dish would cost you about 450 on an average, but is a huge Family serving, like good old days :-) I really do hope that they brush up their interior though!! After all, sizzler dishes are not half as good, being brought home! read less
